TDK Electronics has brought a cold plasma sterilization system to European hospitals through its relyon plasma subsidiary, targeting a compliance gap that is narrowing fast. The product, called MediPlas, processes medical instruments at room temperature using non-toxic input gases.

Pressure on ethylene oxide has been building for years. EU authorities flagged the substance as carcinogenic and mutagenic in 2020. The European Commission subsequently moved to withdraw EtO approval for biocidal products, with implementation expected from early 2025. Hospitals managing complex, heat-sensitive instrument inventories have few established alternatives at scale.

MediPlas works by converting ambient air, oxygen, and moisture into reactive oxygen and nitrogen species through dielectric barrier discharge. Those species, including nitric oxide and hydrogen peroxide, attack bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores across irregular surface geometries. Biofilm inside catheters and endoscope channels, a persistent source of hospital-acquired infections, falls within scope. Reactive species decompose into stable oxygen within seconds of treatment, leaving no chemical residue.

For sterile services departments, the operational difference is measurable. Instruments previously requiring multi-day ethylene oxide cycles, followed by extended aeration periods, can be processed faster without toxic gas storage or device disassembly.

Cold plasma is not alone in moving toward European hospitals. VHP and e-beam technologies are also advancing as EtO restrictions tighten. Validation against ISO sterilization standards for each device category remains the threshold each technology must clear before broader adoption is possible.
